What is telemedicine?

Telemedicine is personalized medical care over the internet. You connect to the Chicago Diabetes Experts team through your smartphone, tablet, or computer.

Telemedicine appointments include a private teleconference with the team from the privacy of your home. All telemedicine appointments are face-to-face, and they work much like office-based care.

You have an appointment time, just like in the office. But this way, you save a lot of time driving to the office, and there’s no wait to see the team.

When might I need telemedicine?

Telemedicine is convenient when you need:

  • A routine check-in about your diabetes
  • Weight management
  • Nutrition counseling
  • Help with high or low blood sugar readings
  • Help with insulin pump questions
  • Help with inhaled insulin usage
  • Help with your diabetes medication

Many patients love the convenience of telemedicine and prefer it for most of their diabetes monitoring and care.

When do I need in-office care instead of telemedicine?

For the most part, diabetes care is now accessible through telemedicine. But, your first appointment ( consultation visit) at Chicago Diabetes Experts is always in the office. Your first visit must be in person; and includes a blood test and complete physical. You also discuss the following:

  • Nutrition and exercise
  • Weight management
  • Emotional and behavioral issues related to diabetes
  • Insulin use
  • Glucose monitoring
  • Diabetes medication

This significant first visit is an introduction to the concierge medicine model of care, and you spend up to three hours with the team that day. It gives you a strong foundation and helps you plan future care.

If you opt to join the concierge medicine plan, you have the choice of 4-10 visits per year, with both in-office or telemedicine available for those future visits. House calls are available on the family plan as well. You also get the doctor’s personal email or cell phone number to reach out anytime you need answers to your questions.

While you can opt for telehealth for the bulk of your care if desired, there are times when you may need to come into the office for blood tests or to get help managing an insulin pump complication.

Telehealth is making it easier for people with diabetes to manage their disease and live healthier lives. To learn more about telehealth care, call Chicago Diabetes Experts or book your appointment online today.
